Many popular lakes have plowed access points and roads. That's true on the Winnebago system, where spearers are placing shacks in anticipation of the Feb. 12 opener.
Sturgeon biologist Ron Bruch said water clarity was 12 feet last week and is improving. He expects it to be even better by opening weekend. The snow prevents light from sparking algae blooms and cold weather means no run-off events that can cloud the water off tributaries.
