Sturgeon spearers are making final preparations for this weekend's opener on the Lake Winnebago system. Water clarity reports have improved to nearly 13 feet on average, with visibility 15 feet or more off the Quinney and Stockbridge areas.
A warming trend could spark an improved panfish, pike, bass and walleye bite on lakes. Try working jig and bait combos near the weeds in 8 to 22 feet of water for panfish. For pike, work even shallower and use a large shiner or sucker minnow.
• With the EPA's recent decision allowing the use of gasoline with up to 15 percent ethanol (E15) in 2001 and newer model cars and trucks, boaters may need to be extra vigilant when filling up. For more information on the potential dangers of using E15 in boats, go to BoatUS.com/ seaworthy/ethanol.asp.
