The Republican measure would permit anyone to kill their first buck without taking an antlerless deer first. The Department of Natural Resources could still require a hunter to kill an antlerless deer before taking a second buck, however.

The bill also would generally block the DNR from establishing gun seasons ahead of the traditional November hunt, although it does create exceptions, including for youth, mentored and disabled hunts and hunts in chronic wasting disease zones.

The Senate Natural Resources Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on the bill Thursday morning in Madison.
