An unlimited number of licenses is available for Lake Winnebago. As of Friday morning, the Department of Natural Resources had sold 6,283. The DNR has limited the number of upriver licenses to 500, however. Those licenses are available only to people who submitted an application before Aug. 1. DNR officials say 86 of those applicants had purchased a license as of Friday morning.
The agency typically sells around 12,000 spearing licenses annually.
Licenses cost $20 for state residents and $65 for non-residents.
