A driver who crossed the centerline and struck a car head-on in the city Tuesday was reaching for a cell phone at the time of the crash, police say.

At about 1:30 p.m., Joseph Morales’ cell phone rang while he was southbound on Pioneer Road near Grove Street, said Fond du Lac Police Department Capt. Steve Klein.

When Morales answered the phone his SUV crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a vehicle driven by Lorraine Ryan, 79, of Eden.

Ryan and her passenger, Alice Wood, 76, of Eden, were extricated from their vehicle.

Ryan was transported by Flight for Life to Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah.

She was listed in critical condition as of Wednesday morning, said a hospital spokesperson.

Wood was transported by ambulance to St. Agnes Hospital.

Wood was listed in fair condition at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, said a spokesperson.

Morales was cited for inattentive driving and for knowingly operating after revocation–causing serious bodily harm.
