Spectators and athletes from around the world traveled to Wausau Whitewater Park for the second day of competition for the 2012 International Canoe Federation Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom World Championships.
Cars parked near the whitewater course boasted license plates from more than 15 states, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida and Arizona.
Spectators from more than 25 countries filled the park, making friends and teaching each other cheers in different languages. Manfred Walter, 57, from Switzerland, said the atmosphere was relaxed compared to other competitions across the pond.
High schoolers Samantha Holton, 15, and Michaela Gunseor, 16, are on summer break. The pair came out to the competition to spend a day in the sun and hang out while watching the races.
Thousands of spectators are expected to attend the championships before races end Sunday afternoon.
