The Lake Michigan side of Door County isn’t the only place around here to find people plunging into the icy waters on New Year’s Day.

The Washington Island Polar Bear Club holds its annual swim at noon Jan. 1 off Schoolhouse Beach. Club leader “Papa Bear” Jens Hansen said the laid-back event has taken place for about 15 years and had about 30 participants in each of the past two years.

Those who wish to take the plunge should note that they must submerge themselves under the water — no just dipping the tootsies. They also should arrive 15 minutes early to sign the registration book.
