While in the Brule River State Forest a week-and-a-half ago I revisited the mouth of the Brule River. It flows into Lake Superior in Douglas County near the end of Brule River Road.
The chilling wind, icy beach, and frozen river contrasted with the warmth of my visit last summer.
I tried to picture the five presidents who have visited the area, fishing for trout in the Brule: Ulysses Grant, Grover Cleveland, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Dwight Eisenhower.
The area is rich in history. Explorers, American Indians, missionaries, traders, and trappers used foot trails and the river here for centuries.
I also stopped for a look at the Brule from County FF, where rapids to the north and south kept the water from freezing over.
I would like to return to the Brule River to canoe through Brule River Boreal Forest (No. 160) .
The DNR website advises putting in at the Hwy 13 canoe landing.
