After one of the warmest Decembers on record, the south end of Lake Winnebago and its bays are finally ice capped and fairly fish-able. We have seen 3-5 inches of ice in the bays. People are just now heading out on the main basin on the south end and ice reports vary between 2- and 4-inches.

Pan fish are in the shallows now and action has been fairly consistent. The water remains very stained from our big snow storm in which we saw winds gusting on the big lake in excess of 35 mph. The lake wasn't frozen over at the point of the storm and it really rocked Winnebago. Bright colored ice jigs and wax worms seem to be producing the best for the gills and small shiners have been taking the perch. The recent cold snap has helped the ice a bit, but extreme caution is still advised.
