The latest weather has definitely helped with the ice thickness after the rain last week. The forecast is looking really good for some serious ice making next week!
Just a word of caution as people start to head out on Winnebago. there are a couple of spots with open water close to popular areas where guys are fishing. The mouths of Millers Bay and the area east of the Island in South Asylum Bay around the point. The crack that runs north and south is working with the winds and changing temperatures. The area out in front of the mouth of the river has just froze as well.
The fishing has been very good for panfish in the bays especially early in the morning and during the last hour of daylight on Winnebago. Not much happening out in the main lake mainly due to the poor ice for getting out there. Lake Poygan is hot right now for the whitebass, crappies and a few walleyes. The best access is off the south shore at either spruce, herbst or the county landing. 4 wheelers and snowmobile traffic should be fine as the ice varies from 6-9" in all the places I checked. I did not get too close to the mouth of the river to check. Bright jiggin raps or copper/orange slender spoons with a naked hook worked well but it never hurts to add a few spikes every now an then.

Tight lines everyone and stay warm this next week!
