Al Zangl had a memorable outing Tuesday, but it was a very quiet day for most of the other sturgeon spearers on Lake Winnebago.

Zangl registered a fish measuring 70.7 inches and weighing in at 110.2 pounds at Wendt’s on the Lake near Van Dyne.

It was one of just seven sturgeon taken from Lake Winnebago. Activity was especially quiet on the north end of the lake, with no fish registered at Waverly Beach and Stockbridge Harbor, according to a news release from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

The season total for Lake Winnebago after four days stands at 76.

“I was at Quinney during much of the morning and spearers there were reporting that water clarity may be improving in certain areas of the lake,” said Ryan Koeings, DNR fisheries biologist.

The 2013 season on the Upriver Lakes closed at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday with a four-day total of 261 sturgeon speared. The season was tied for the second-shortest since the lottery system was put in place in 2007. Last year’s two-day season is the shortest.

“The big-fish trend on the Upriver Lakes continued this year with 10 fish — 3.8 percent — being harvested that were in excess of 100 pounds,” Koenigs said.

The largest fish of the Upriver Lakes season was a female speared on opening day by Robert Prahl. It weighed 124.5 pounds and measured 72 feet, 9 inches.

John Vandersanden registered a 73-inch, 110.6-pounder Tuesday for the day’s largest Upriver Lakes fish.
