Brian Wendt, left, of Eldorado, spears a 71.7 pounds and 67.2 long; Scott Klein, of Fond du Lac, spears his largest at a 114.6 pounds at 68.7 long. The boys spears their catch of the day before 8 a.m. and registered it at Wendt's on the Lake Friday, Feb. 15, 2013.

Sturgeon spearers took 76 fish on Saturday and Sunday, eclipsing the 60 speared opening weekend on Lake Winnebago, the Department of Natural Resources reports.

Water quality continued to improve Sunday and spearers harvested 39 fish. The largest of the day was a 74-inch, 120-lb female taken by Michael Goebel and registered at Stockbridge Harbor.

Three other fish weighed more than 100 pounds Sunday.

DNR fish biologist Ryan Koenigs said the current sturgeon population is “loaded with 100-plus pound sturgeon” due to better fishery management. The proliferation of gizzard shad has also contributed to the health of the Winnebago System.
