Ice fishing for many species of game fish is now closed throughout the state. And many anglers don't care to battle other boats chasing river walleyes this time of the year. But ... there's no need to give up fishing for now as there are plenty of big fish action to be had in our harbors and tributaries. The steelhead run is getting close and there are already a lot of fish in the river in southeastern Wisconsin. The best fishinghowever, may still behunting giant brown trout in our harbors and marinas.

The late winter brown trout bite can be FANTASTIC! I was out with Matt Folz of Elkhorn this past Saturday and we found a consistent bite for both browns and steelhead. A few of the browns were in the 30" range and we caught fish throughout the day on fresh spawn.. There were not many dull moments.

Watch the ice conditions out there. The ice sheet can do funny things in the harbors when the wind is blowing! Conditions around docks can also prove to be callenging as temperatures warm. Based on the forecast for this week, though, the harbors may still be adding ice for a while.

Once the melt occurs and the ice bite ends the browns don't just magically disappear. Float fishing with spawn sacs and small jigs can still be great and casting jointed Rapala's and Flicker Shads can be dynamite in the marinas.

Again, caution is advised, but now is not the time to give up on harbor fishing for browns and steelhead!
