Sturgeon spawn on the Wolf River
Sturgeon spawn on the Wolf River: Residents come out to watch sturgeon spawn along the Wolf River in New London. (April 29, 2013)

If you have volunteered – or are thinking of volunteering – to be a Sturgeon Guard for the upcoming spawning season on the Wolf River, this update is for you.

Warden Supervisor April Dombrowski of Oshkosh says while the delayed spring has stalled the spawning season and caused the cancellation of the all-volunteer guard shifts through today, it also means guard shifts have been extended through May 13. And those shifts, she says, need volunteers.

“It will take a few warm days and evenings for the water temperatures to reach ideal conditions for the sturgeon to go active,” Dombrowski says of the warmer temperatures in the forecast for this weekend and into the week. “But once they do, we will have our hands full.”

Dombrowski says volunteers especially are needed for shifts later in the day and evening.

It’s simple to register for a shift. You can call the DNR Call Center – 888-936-7463. That’s a toll free number. Or, go to this website to sign up online, use a form or use the email for the Sturgeon Guard coordinator: http://dnr.wi.gov/SGsignUp/
