Why did the chicken run the 5K? To get a free beer at the Wisconsin Warrior Dash this past Saturday, of course.

Held at Milford Hills outside Johnson Creek, the Warrior Dash is a fun mud-run, offering a plethora of unique and unusual costumes worn by the thousands of participants. Of course, it is a little unnerving running on hunting club grounds dressed as a chicken, wondering if clay pigeons were truly the only fowl in season. For an outdoor obstacle event, this one is huge and very well orchestrated. The paths are wide and runner-friendly. Well, except for the occasional thigh-deep, shoe-gobbling mud, but you’ll have that. Water stations were oddly both placed in the first half of the course, but I suppose that if you were really thirsty, you could drink from the several obstacles pouring water on you down the road.

Trying to ramp up the ‘soft’ image of the Dash, race officials increased the number of obstacles this year to an even dozen and ramped up the mud and water challenges. The hardest of which was a short series of mud hills capped with a 10-foot long mud slide. This was more humorous than difficult as it was a struggle to crawl out of the landing pit as more human bowling balls would come down the slide, knocking everyone down again and again.

Overall, the Warrior Dash is a very fun event and great excuse to exercise and get muddy with family and friends. Sure it’s still an outdoor 5k with obstacles that’s hard to do without any training at all. One struggling first-timer succinctly summed it up at the halfway point with two words, “This sucks.” So maybe walk a few blocks in advance next year, sign up early to get the early bird discount and enjoy a fun day with over 5,000 of your new friends.
