I discovered that the Wisconsin State Fair offers outdoorsy experiences.

I know that the horticulture demonstrations, domesticated animals Ė think cattle breed shows, cattle barns, small animal palace, pig and duck races, and dog diving competitions -- donít count.

But I did find outdoorsy presentations.

I strolled to the vulture and hawk talk at the WE Energies Energy Park. Two presenters and birds entertained and enlightened the audience with bird characteristics and behaviors. I didnít get to the Sky Hunters: Birds of Prey presentation.

The DNRís Natural Resources Park was a surprise the first year I attended the state fair. Paths wound through tall trees, adults and kids explored educational nature discovery areas and gardens Ė rain, butterfly, and backyard. Live animals Ė reptiles, fish, native Wisconsin animals as well as stuffed animals were available to educate fair visitors. Rangers answered questions and sold fishing and hunting licenses. Master gardeners answered questions. Children tentatively touched a large snake held by a young man. Children practiced archery with the help of assistants from the Archery in Schools program. Fish biologists presented a program at the fish tank. A forest firefighter answered questions about equipment used to fight forest fires in Wisconsin Ö

Perhaps Iíll see you there next year!

Marilynn Nash writes about her exploration of the outdoors in Wisconsin -- a variety of outdoor experiences -- hiking, biking, snowshoeing, trailbuilding volunteer work, boating, ski hill tubing and more. She'll probably try a few things she hasn't done before.
