When its ninety degrees outside and the air is so thick it feels like you could cut it with a steak knife, my mind drifts to thoughts of a frozen lake and ice fishing.
My friends will say, “Small thoughts for small minds.” These daydreams get me through the August blues and into the cooler September temperatures.
I have already charged my Vexlars twice this summer and scrubbed the remnants of old man winter from my ice shacks. Call it therapy or some sort of disorder, but I enjoy the planning and it really does seem to help me with the summer heat.
Summer is also a good time to book your hotel rooms or make plans to visit your bucket list destinations.
One to consider in 2014 is Mark Martin’s Ice Fishing Vacation which will be held on January 5 to 8 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on Lake Gogebic. This year the host lodge will be the Timbers’ Resort near the town of Berglund, Michigan. The resort, dining facilities and classroom are all located within a stone’s throw of each which should make your stay a pleasure. Mark and his staff are eager to teach and will display all of the new gear for 2014.
Each of the participants receives a box full of fishing gear from his sponsors. As an attendee of the school last year I can tell you that the fishing was fabulous with many northern, walleyes and perch caught by first time ice anglers. The class does fill up fast so be sure to book your spot now.
For more information on the school visit http://www.fishingvacationschool.com or call them at 231-744-0330. To enroll in the class or receive information regarding the Lake Gogebic area, call Tim or Sara Long at the Timbers Resort at 906-575-3542.
I’m not rooting for ice just yet, as there is some great fall fishing to be had, and there's deer hunting, too.
If you have not bought your Lake Winnebago sturgeon tag remember the October 31 deadline will be here soon.
