The fall salmon run on Lake Michigan has come close to completion in most ports along Wisconsin's east coastline, but that doesn't mean the fishing has slowed. Brown trout and steelhead are starting to show up in numbers and are often accessible from the shore and break walls.

Look for the fish to be hanging near holes, current breaks, and structures, including docks in most marinas. Spawn sacks and shiners under floats work well, as do jigs/plastics, spoons, and smaller crank baits.

The fish tend to be most active during low light periods but can be caught throughout the day, especially in cloudy or breezy conditions. Night fishing can also be red hot if you can keep your reels and eyelets from freezing up.

This bite is really just starting and will continue throughout winter and into spring when the steelhead move into the rivers to spawn. Ports from Bailey's Harbor to Kenosha will produce fish, and the crowds are usually small because of cooler temperatures and hunting seasons.
