Fishing for brown trout and steelhead in the Lake Michigan harbors and tributaries is turning into a hard water adventure early this year. I was able to get out in my boat on Black Friday and caught a number of browns in Milwaukee. The steelhead bite has been slow this fall in that harbor, but there are a few fish around.

Fisherman looking to get out in there boats one more time can look for launches in the rivers that are open. Bing maps can help!

I've seen evidence that the ice bite is underway a little further up the shoreline. Steelhead are being caught in the Sheboygan marina and I've heard of others getting caught on the ice further north as well. Be extremely careful venturing onto the ice in the marinas and rivers this early. Heavy currents make ice formation inconsistent.

Spawn sacks, live shiners, and small hair jigs with wax worms all work well early in the ice season.

Good luck, and be careful on the ice this time of the year!
