Fans of rustic camping — no electricity, no flush toilets, no showers — now have a modern way to keep tabs on campsites in Wisconsin's largest state forest.
Fort McCoy's campground's summer hours will take effect this weekend.
People looking for available campsites in the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, Wisconsin’s largest state forest with nearly 900 available campsites, can now check campsite availability online, or if they have an iPhone, by using a newly available app.
The campgrounds are now open across the 1.5 million acres of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest (CNNF) and firewood restrictions are in place to slow the spread of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). This invasive beetle travels on firewood, so please leave firewood at home, unless you live within 25 miles of your National Forest destination.
As wintry weather and record spring rains continue to keep Wisconsin indoors, the entire state is at risk of what outdoors and naturalist experts now refer to as 'nature deficit disorder.'
At 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, hear from Amy Lukas and Mary Catterlin speak on their experience on traveling more than 1,200 miles between states, and who constructed a dugout from a cottonwood tree named Makeba.
