Fishingreports
  1. Phil Schweik shares his weekly outdoor report

It has been another great week of fishing on the lakes and rivers in central Wisconsin. In addition where many lakes up north have restrictions on walleye bag limits, we are still seeing a five fish daily limit on the Wisconsin River and its impoundments.

Crappies are spawning in the Northwoods and the bluegills are not far behind. The walleyes, bass and pike have been very aggressive, and the musky bite is turning on ... Can it get any better?

The 2014 Wisconsin northern zone musky season opens up this weekend and thousands of eager anglers are getting ready to take to the water with one thing on their mind, catching a big musky. We just came through one of the longest and coldest winters on record and anglers are going to have to change things up a bit if they are going to be successful.

Action in Central Wisconsin for multi-species is really turning on. Anglers are having a lot of fun catching walleyes, crappies, bass and pike. In addition to the previously mentioned species action has been very good for bluegills and catfish. All in all the bite has been extremely good.

We found great action for walleyes and crappies this past week with not only numbers of good fish, but some real slabs as well. In addition to the great fishing, turkey hunting has proven very successful for many hunters as well.

Outstanding walleye action on the Wisconsin river this past week with lots of fish being caught. Most of the walleyes are from 15- to 20-inches but we are also catching some real giants up to and over 30 inches. The bite has been very consistent all day long and even after dark with most of the fish coming on jig and minnow combinations during the daytime but at night the bite has been best on crankbaits.

I took a walk through the woods behind the house yesterday and found a nice shed antler from a year old buck. It is not really what I was looking for, but it reminds me that with the snow diminishing, and ground visibility increasing, that this is a good time for locating shed antlers. Finding shed antlers kind if gives you an idea of the bucks that are remaining in the area and the ones that you might be hunting next season.

Action is heating up on the local river system with abundant walleyes being taken by area anglers. Most action is on jig and minnow combinations in the deeper pools, but some nice fish are moving up towards shallower water on sunny days and in the evening.

Open water has arrived and anglers are doing well on walleyes below area dams. Jig and minnow combinations are working in deeper water and crankbaits are working in the shallower areas early and late in the day.
