Blogger Mark Schram offers look at ice conditions on Lake Winnebago and Lake Poygan on Feb. 17, 2014

Another colder than average week graced Lake Winnebago this week, with periodic light snow. The ice surface is navigable by four wheel drive, with normal snow drifting on top of the ice once off of the plowed roads. Ice depths remained relatively unchanged at around 30 inches. An auger extension is now a must in most areas. Water clarity is very clear over the majority of the lake.

Blogger Mark Schram offers look at ice conditions on Lake Winnebago and Lake Poygan on Jan. 14, 2014

A week of contrast was the only way to describe the fishing scene on Lake Winnebago and Lake Poygan this week. The brutal “polar vortex” took air temperatures to 25 below zero, but by the weekend the air temperature rose to above freezing, creating a 50 degree swing. Ice depths continued to explode this week, with an average of 20 inches of ice on most of Lake Winnebago and Lake Poygan. Water clarity is clear.

Blogger Mark Schram offers look at ice conditions on Lake Winnebago and Lake Poygan on Jan. 8, 2014

Another week of cold temperatures continued to produce ice on Lake Winnebago and Lake Poygan. Fishing conditions deteriorated this week due to snow pack issues on the surface of the ice. At some locations, 2- to 3-foot drifts were observed. On Saturday, I helped pulled three low clearance vehicles out of snow drifts on Lake Winnebago. Ice conditions are excellent, and the bridges on Lake Winnebago are in place at many access points.
